Family Tree

HERE I AM WITH A PROJECT IN MIND SO I CAN GO AHEAD AND BEING A GOOD WORKSOP LADY OF A CERTAIN AGE MY THOUGHTS TURN TO THE PAST.

ON REFLECTION I HAVE SEEN MANY CHANGES IN WORKSOP. THE TOWN HAS EXPANDED SO MANY TIMES IT'S ORIGINAL SIZE BIG ENOUGH TO BUILD A RING ROAD AROUND IT, THE TOWN CENTRE IS PEDESTRIANISED , AND ESPECIALLY FOR ME, A NEW LIBRARY.

I FEEL THAT MY WORKSOP , THE OLD WORKSOP IS SLIPPING AWAY. MANY OF MY ANCESTORS LIVED IN THE TOWN, SOME IN THE MARECROFT AREA, NOW DEMOLISHED, AS HAVE MANY OTHER BUILDINGS WHICH GAVE WORKSOP IT'S SPECIAL CHARACTER AND ARE NOW ONLY MEMORIES.

ALL THIS HAS BEEN CHRONICLED, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED IN THESE BUILDINGS; THIS HAS PROMPTED ME TO SEARCH OUT MY TAYLOR FAMILY WHO LIVED IN LONG LOST MARECROFT.

FROM THESE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS MY TAYLOR FAMILY BECAME ENTREPRENEURS. GREENGROCERS, PAPER SELLERS, CONFECTIONERS, AND THE PINNACLE OF SOCIETY IN WORKSOP "HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR"

I DON'T WANT THEM TO BE FORGOTTEN THEY MUST HAVE HAD SUCH DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED, BECAUSE MARECROFT, WHERE MOST OF THEM LIVED, WAS A LITTLE HIVE OF INDUSTRY, TRANSCENDING THE HORRORS OF POVERTY AND DISEASE.
